  • This is Sally.
  • This is Sally's mom.
  • Sally's mom gives her a list of things to get at the store.
  • So Sally goes out.
  • And goes to the store.
  • And comes home.
  • "What did you buy, Sally?"
  • "I bought gloves, shoes, pants, and a hat."
  • "Those weren't on the list!"
  • "Um, a bear ate the list!"
  • The next day, Sally's mom gives her another list.
  • So Sally goes out.
  • And goes to the store.
  • And comes home.
  • "What did you buy, Sally?"
  • "I bought shoes, a hat, a shirt, and pants."
  • "Those weren't on the list!"
  • "Oh, an eagle flew away with the list!"
  • The next day, Sally's mom gives her yet another list.
  • So Sally goes out.
  • And goes to the store.
  • And comes home.
  • "What did you buy, Sally?"
  • "I bought pants, gloves, a shirt, and shoes."
  • "Those weren't on the list!"
  • "Did a flying pig steal them?"
  • "Don't be silly, Mom! Pigs can't fly!"

  1. This is Sally.
  2. This is Sally's mom.
  3. Sally's mom gives her a list of things to get at the store.
  4. So Sally goes out.
  5. And goes to the store.
  6. And comes home.
  7. "What did you buy, Sally?"
  8. "I bought gloves, shoes, pants, and a hat."
  9. "Those weren't on the list!"
  10. "Um, a bear ate the list!"
  11. The next day, Sally's mom gives her another list.
  12. So Sally goes out.
  13. And goes to the store.
  14. And comes home.
  15. "What did you buy, Sally?"
  16. "I bought shoes, a hat, a shirt, and pants."
  17. "Those weren't on the list!"
  18. "Oh, an eagle flew away with the list!"
  19. The next day, Sally's mom gives her yet another list.
  20. So Sally goes out.
  21. And goes to the store.

  23. "What did you buy, Sally?"

Summary:

Sally is sent by her mother to pick up some items. But she keeps coming home with something different... and wild stories to tell!

This story is designed to get information about "list intonation" -- that distinctive melody people use when listing items.

Is it the same melody in every language? It might be. We don't know! That's what we're trying to find out.
